Sizes are total water area: swimming plus planting. For a planted pool, roughly half of each figure is swimming space; for a hybrid, about seven tenths.
| Total water | Typical US range |
|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | $25,000 to $50,000 |
| 800 sq ft | $40,000 to $80,000 |
| 1,000 sq ft | $50,000 to $100,000 |
| 1,500 sq ft | $75,000 to $150,000 |
| 2,000 sq ft | $100,000 to $200,000 |
What extras add
These sit outside the per-foot price in most quotes.
| Item | Typical range |

| Pool fence to code | $2,000 to $13,500 |
| Solar heating (US Department of Energy) | $2,500 to $4,000 |
| Removing an old pool first | about $6,000 |

What moves the price
Area, not just swimming space. A planted pool gives about half its surface to plants, so a 400 sq ft swim needs about 800 sq ft of water. That is the single biggest reason natural pools cost more than people expect.
The ground. Rock, dense clay, groundwater close to the surface or sloping ground add excavation, retaining walls and drainage. Easy, level ground with access for an excavator keeps costs near the low end.
Walls and finish. A flexible liner on shaped earth is the least costly build. Concrete or block walls, stone coping and timber decks add a great deal.
System. A hybrid adds a biofilter, phosphate filter and vault, but needs less excavated area. On a small lot it can come out cheaper overall.
Region. These are national figures. Labor and permit costs are higher in the Northeast and on the West Coast and lower in much of the South and Midwest.

Cost questions
How much does a natural pool cost per square foot?
National cost guides published in 2025 agree on $50 to $100 per square foot of total water area, which includes the planted regeneration zone, not just the swimming area.
Is a natural pool cheaper than a regular pool?
To build, usually not by much, and sometimes more, because a planted pool covers more ground for the same swimming area. The savings come later: no chlorine, salt or shock, and usually a smaller pump.
What is the cheapest way to build a natural pool?
Keep the shape simple, use a liner rather than concrete walls, choose easy ground with good access, and leave stone edging and decks for later. A hybrid can also save money on a tight lot by shrinking the plant zone.
How much does it cost to convert a pool to a natural pool?
Published US figures run $50,000 to $175,000, depending on how much of the old pool is kept and whether a planted zone is added. See pool conversions.
What does a natural pool cost to run each year?
There are no chemicals to buy. Electricity for a low-speed pump, the odd replacement plant ($10 to $100 each) and, for hybrids, filter media. Paid upkeep runs about $15 to $260 a month if you want it.
Do I need to budget for a fence?
If the yard is not already enclosed to code, yes. National guides put a pool fence at $2,000 to $13,500. Codes based on the ISPSC ask for at least 48 in.
